Why this part of Ladakh matters
Hanle sits at 4,500m on the Changthang plateau and is home to India's first Dark Sky Reserve. At that altitude, there's less atmosphere between you and the night sky, which means sharper visibility and far less light interference.
September is one of the best times to be here. The monsoon has usually cleared out dust and haze, the skies stay dry, and the Milky Way core is still visible through most of the night.
Altitude at Hanle
Higher altitude means thinner atmosphere and clearer night skies.
India's Darkest Skies
Among the darkest skies accessible in the country, with visible dust lanes in the Milky Way and exceptional naked-eye visibility.
Active Research Sites
IIA Solar Observatory, Hanle observatory complex, and the Himalayan Chandra Telescope.
Ideal Conditions
Clear post-monsoon skies, cold dry air, and excellent visibility for deep sky observation.
9 days across Ladakh's darkest skies
Day-by-Day Itinerary Instructions
Arrival in Leh · Indus walk · First stargazing session
Arrive in Leh (3,500m) and transfer to a guesthouse near Thiksey, away from the brighter parts of the city.
In the evening, take an easy walk along the Indus River to settle in and acclimatise.
After dinner, the first stargazing session begins with an introduction to the September sky, telescope basics, and the constellations visible over Ladakh.
Thiksey Monastery · Leh exploration
Visit Thiksey Monastery in the morning, followed by stops around Leh including Leh Palace and the local market.
In the evening, there’s a sky briefing covering the Milky Way core, planetary visibility, and the observation plan for the next few nights.
Changla Pass · Merak · IIA Solar Observatory
Drive over Changla Pass (5,360m) toward Merak on the quieter southern side of Pangong Tso.
Visit the Indian Institute of Astrophysics Solar Observatory, where active solar monitoring is carried out at high altitude.
At night, photograph the Milky Way reflected over Pangong Tso under low-light conditions.
Merak to Hanle Dark Sky Reserve
Travel through the Changthang plateau, crossing remote high-altitude terrain and small Changpa settlements along the route.
Arrive in Hanle, India’s only Dark Sky Reserve.
The first observing session in Hanle focuses on naked-eye sky orientation, deep sky visibility, and Milky Way structure under Bortle 1 conditions.
Umling La · Dark sky session
Drive to Umling La at 5,798m, currently one of the world’s highest motorable roads.
Night observations include galaxies, open clusters, and zodiacal light if conditions are favourable.
Hanle observatories · Monastery · Wildlife drive
Visit the Hanle observatory complex, including MACE, HAGAR, and the Himalayan Chandra Telescope.
Later, visit Hanle Monastery and head out on a wildlife drive across the Changthang region.
Deep sky astrophotography night focuses on nebulae and galaxy imaging.
Hanle to Tso Moriri
Drive through the Changthang plateau toward Tso Moriri, passing remote high-altitude landscapes and nomadic settlements.
Arrive at the lake by afternoon. Quieter and less crowded than Pangong, Tso Moriri offers some of the cleanest night skies on the route.
Evening astrophotography and the final major observing session of the camp.
Tso Moriri to Leh
Exploratory day - Explore LEH markets and Ladakhi local cuisines
Departure
Transfer to Leh Airport for departure flights.
