WHY HANLE

Why this part of Ladakh matters

Hanle sits at 4,500m on the Changthang plateau and is home to India's first Dark Sky Reserve. At that altitude, there's less atmosphere between you and the night sky, which means sharper visibility and far less light interference.

September is one of the best times to be here. The monsoon has usually cleared out dust and haze, the skies stay dry, and the Milky Way core is still visible through most of the night.

4,500m

Altitude at Hanle

Higher altitude means thinner atmosphere and clearer night skies.

Bortle 1

India's Darkest Skies

Among the darkest skies accessible in the country, with visible dust lanes in the Milky Way and exceptional naked-eye visibility.

3 IIA

Active Research Sites

IIA Solar Observatory, Hanle observatory complex, and the Himalayan Chandra Telescope.

September

Ideal Conditions

Clear post-monsoon skies, cold dry air, and excellent visibility for deep sky observation.
